New British Paramotor Champion

British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (2) The National Paramotor Championships at Wingland, Lincs, in July provided a week of good flying and the largest UK national paramotor event since 2016.

Dan Jones emerged as the new National Champion ahead of Russell Hesketh-Roberts and Blaise Brogan. Walter Spence led the Discovery class and Quinn Andrade the Club class.

Dan was first in the CP class in 2020, third in the National class in 2021, and now is top UK paramotor pilot. Photo by Neil Forster.

RAeC bursary for Finley Redford

British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (4) Sole BHPA recipient this year is 17-year-old Finley Redford, a trainee paraglider pilot at Airworks in West Sussex.

Having seen paramotors flying near his home, Finley made his way to Airworks who started him on the road to paragliding.

Persuading his part-time employer to increase his hours, he worked throughout last summer to save enough to start his EP. His sights are now set on achieving CP with the bursary's help.

Longer term, his sights are set on an aeronautical engineering degree and a career in aircraft design.

If you are aged 14-21 (or up to 24 for follow-on bursaries) and want to progress in your discipline, take advantage of the RAeC scheme scheme. The closing date for 2023 applications is March 31st 2023. Details and forms are available on the Royal Aero Club Trust website.

Icarus Cup is this month!

British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (5) This annual week-long gathering represents the state of the art in human-powered flying. The niche discipline has gained momentum over the last year and progress in the field is expected.

Southampton University's Lazarus reappeared last year to secured the RAeS Formula Flight prize; it has since been rebuilt and flown in yet another new guise, and David Barford's Betterfly is also expected to return to the fray.

There has also been activity in the Aerocyle camp (pictured), and there may be entirely new entries from further afield.

The early-morning event at Lasham is shaping up to be a breakthrough this year as HPAs slowly move forward to greater achievements.

Marshalls are required to assist with the running of the event; if you're interested in witnessing - and assisting - the evolution of human-powered flight, contact Tony Prentice at tony.prentice1@btinternet.com.

Tour de France Airspace Restrictions

British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (6) The 109th Tour de France takes place between July 1st - July 24th 2022, with 21 stages all around France, in a large variety of landscapes.

As in previous years, the race will be overflown by aircraft flying at different altitudes and temporary restricted areas (TRA) will be in place in mountain areas.

The CNFAS strongly recommend that pilots visiting France during this period avoid flying over stages of the Tour de France, and respect mandatory air rules and conditions of airspace penetration published in Notams, AIC or AIP SUP.
